130. The two most important truths that man must learn are : Of myself, I am nothing. What I
am, is from God and for God.
131. One of the virtues which is particularly liked in a religious is humility. All exterior
works connected with our vocation are humble ones, but this simple work to which we give ourselves has value in God's eyes,
because it is by it that we resemble His son, Who took the form of a slave.
132. Humility must make us love what in the purely natural judgment of the world is insignificant.
It must deepen the consciousness of sin in us, teach us to suffer the consequences of our inclination to evil.
133. We would never have reached the concept of humility if Jesus Christ had not given us the
example by His actions and His doctrine. Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart.
134. It was out of humility that He washed His apostles' feet - those poor and rugged men - without
excluding the one who would betray Him. He did it the night before He died, to emphasize that humility is the foundation and
the perfection of religious life.
135. We must consider and imitate this real abasement of the master.
136. If we think something
too insignificant for ourselves, we are not worthy to follow Him.
137. The true Christians of the world appreciate humility. All the same, we may not become attached
to their esteem, nor be proud of it.
138. He who taught us humility warned us also : When you have done all that was commanded,
you are to say, it was our duty to do what we have done.
139. The religious needs humility. A great fidelity to the vows and to the rule demands a continual
fight against nature, a struggle in which many graces are necessary, and God can only give His grace to the humble.
140. You have not yet discovered the treasure humility is; you do not yet consider yourself as
the least of all. You are not yet joyful when you are scorned, or when someone has unjust suspicions of you. You are still
like the little children who cry when they are being washed, because they do not know that they are dirty.
141. One single act of humility is worth more than all that palpable consolations one can taste
in prayer.
142. Be humble so as to please God, and so that He will bless the works you undertake for His
glory.
