INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE CANON TRIEST

Post-secondary Vocation Education and Training in Psychiatric Nursing

Field of education

The curriculum of the nurse education and training program is based on a clear of the individual, the social and physical environment, health and nursing. Students begin by studying health, the healthy person and care, before proceeding to the study of the treatment of ill and specifically mentanlillness. The proggram is oriented towards health care, the profession of nursing and specifically psychiatric nursing.

Level of education

As the title suggests, the program is designed on a post-secondary, vocation level. According tot level 5B of the International Standard Classification of Education of the UNESCO.

This level is part of the tertiary education; this means that the entry program requires the successful completion of a secondary education program. The content of every ISCED-level 5B program is practically oriented/occupationally specific and mainly designed for participants to acquire the practical skills and know-how for employment is a particular occupation. Therefore is the program of this level divided into a theoretically based/giving direct access tot the profession program on the one hand and a practical/technical/occupationally specific program on the other hand.

The theoretical part of this nursing training program is where is student acquire the knowledge, understanding and professional skill needed to plan, provide and assess total nursing care. The practical part or clinical instruction is where the student nurses as a part of a team and in direct contact with a healthy or sick individual and/or group learn to plan, provide and assess the require total nursing care on the basis of their acquired knowledge and skills. This part of the training program takes place in hospital and other health institutions. The theoretical part is balanced and coordinated with the clinical part, in such a way that the knowledge and experience may be acquired in an adequate manner. The lengths of both parts are equal.

Three modules form the program. Each module is divided in a theoretical and a practical part. These modules represent broad steps of educational progression from elementary basic nursing to more complex experiences in the field of mental illness.

Learning Aims

At the basis of every program/diploma are the learning aims of that program. These learning aims describe at a general level what is expected in theory and practice of the student. With the help of the specific learning aims, the learning content of what the student has to learn can be formulated. For example, the knowledge or attitude one must have after the course etc.

In educational theory it is customary to make use of a so-called taxonomy. Taxonomy is meant to structure the learning aims. With the help of the taxonomy, per learning aim can be specified the extent to which the student has to master the content of the learning aim. In vocational education the taxonomy of Romizowski is frequently used by educational experts. For this reason, this taxonomy is also used here to formulate the learning aims.

Only the first module Basic Nursing, leading to the qualification of Healthcare Assistant is worked out in learning objectives, as example.
